Surrounded by farmland and mountains, Zhu'an (bamboo hut) is designed for an artist couple. Located at the eastern periphery of Chengbei village, Xizhou township in Yunnan, China. Chengbei village is famous for its traditional courtyard houses of the local Bai minority. The neighbor's house, to the west of the site, is a well-preserved prototype of such. Zhu'an adopts the inward-looking character of the traditional courtyard house, using nine courtyards to organize the space and program. The use of lime plaster mixed with straw – a very common form of rendering for external walls in Xizhou – also helps relate the new house to its context.
