Sunyata Meili
Deqin, 2018
Zhaoyang Architects
In the ruggedly awe-inspiring mountain terrain of China’s Yunnan province, the Sunyata Meili hotel took 1,095 days to complete the sensitive restoration of this ancient structure 3,600 meters above sea level. Guided by Tibetan principles of architecture, the atrium ceiling carries a large curved arch, its gilded surface reflects natural light illuminating the interiors within. Here wabi-sabi is practiced through the aged texture of natural materials, salvaged wood, earth tones and a restrained aesthetic that treasures “emptiness”.
